Audi’s Bloody Sneezing Came from a Tooth Root, with Heart Valve Disease Stage B2

Audi, a 12-year-old Pomeranian treated for bloody sneezing

Audi is a tiny 12-year-old Pomeranian. Her bloody sneezing stopped after treatment of an infected, decayed tooth root, even though she also has heart valve disease at stage B2. A thorough check before anesthesia allowed us to plan her treatment safely.

Why Audi came in

Audi had bloody sneezing and chronic nosebleeds. She had already been treated for blood parasites, but the problem did not improve, so she was brought to us for a second opinion.

The cause: an infected tooth root that opened into the nose

Our team found that the problem most likely came from a decayed, infected tooth root with an opening that connected through to the nose. Treatment needed dental scaling and a full clean-up of the mouth.

A heart check before anesthesia

Because Audi is a senior dog, a thorough exam before anesthesia was very important. Our vets found that she also has heart valve disease (MMVD) at stage B2, so the anesthesia plan and monitoring during the procedure had to be especially careful.

Results

The oral exam, scaling and extraction of the problem teeth went well. Audi recovered nicely with the help of our vets and nurses.

Her bloody sneezing has gone and has not come back. Audi now has a better quality of life and eats better, even with fewer teeth, because she is no longer in pain. She has regular follow-up checks and receives heart medication.
