Lucky Was Hit by a Car: Broken Left Hind Leg and Dislocated Right Hip

October 24, 2026

X-ray of a dog's hind leg after plate surgery, Lucky's case

Lucky was hit by a car and could not walk. After surgery to place a plate in his left hind leg and treat his right hip, he was walking again about 6 days after surgery.

Unable to walk on both hind legs

Lucky was most likely hit by a car. X-rays showed a broken left hind leg and a dislocated right hip, so he could not walk on either hind leg.

Plate surgery and hip treatment

Our vet placed a plate and screws to stabilize the left leg and performed surgery to treat the right hip. Follow-up X-rays were then taken to check both the hip and the plate in the leg.

Recovery and walking again

Lucky stayed with us for wound care and was looked after until his stitches were removed. Our team monitored him and helped him practice walking step by step, until he was walking again about 6 days after surgery.

Fractures and hip dislocations happen in both dogs and cats

If your pet is hit by a car, falls from a height, or takes a hard knock, bring them in for a check as soon as possible. Our vets will examine your pet and give you a cost estimate before you decide.
